Hugh's Biography

Hugh McKenzie is well known as Lake Temagami's resident artist.  Born and raised in the  area, trapping with his father, Donald, he learned to respect the beauty of nature, it also sparked his interest in land, water, birds and animals.

As a boy Hugh and his friend Benjamin Chee Chee, both showed  talent for art, spending much time together perfecting their craft.  Benjamin invited Hugh to accompany him to Ottawa in 1967 to paint/design and share their skills.  Once perfected they sold their art to Canadian Indian Marketing Services, and continued to do so until Benjamin's untimely death in 1976.

After the death of his friend Hugh continued to work on his sponge/stencil style doing realistic birds, animals and spiritual affirmation designs.

Hugh now does all of his art, printing and related work in his Bear Island home and studio.  Bear Island Reserve, Temagami Welcome Centre also display Hugh's art.  He also displays and autographs his prints at Casino Rama Gallery.
